My hula lineage begins with my grandmother, Lillian Ka’anoali’i Mahaiula Aquai, who was born and raised in Hilo, Hawai’i. My firm foundation in the dance arts of Hawai’i, Tahiti & New Zealand were set by her, and to this day, I seek her guidance (through prayers) and carry on her traditions. She taught me how to teach, which ultimately led me to dance studio ownership and forming Hālau Makana Polynesian Cultural Arts.

This song holds a special place in Hawaii’s history. Helen Prendergast wrote it for the Royal Hawaiian Band in 1893 to protest the overthrow of Queen Lili`uokalani and annexation of Hawai`i to the United States. Still relevant today, it has become the anthem for the Sovereignty Movement. The choreography you will learn is from Aunty Ida Wong, whose classic style of hula comes from her kumu, Keaka Kanahele. who also taught the iconic dancer, Iolani Luahine.

Class Requirements:
Please wear pa`u or pareu while in class.  Written choreography will be provided, but bring pen and paper for supplementary notes. No other special materials are required for the class, but bring a long Hawaiian dress and your choice of hair accessory and lei to wear when we dance this at the Ho`ike Sunday afternoon.

Betty Ann Ka`ihilani Bruno was born in Hawai`i but grew up in California. She has always honored her Hawaiian ancestry through the hula and, now, retired from her career as a news reporter at KTVU, she has a full schedule of classes, shows, workshops and kanikapila through Hula Mai, which she founded in 2009.  See Website: www.hulamai.org.
