Hawaiian Featherwork: Kāhili Paʻa Lima

Skill Level – Basic
Early Bird Workshop Fee $125 ($150 after January 15th).

Each student will construct a 4ʻ tall Kahili Pa’a Lima using dyed goose feathers.  Instructor will provide all materials and supplies.

Class requirements -Students are requested to bring a bath towel or beach towel — to be used as a tablecloth.

Additional class materials – Instructor will provide all materials and supplies.  An additional fee of $35 per student will be collected by instructor.

Herman Tachera is the kumu and founder of Hui Lei Hulu O Ho’omau located in the San Francisco Bay Area.  He has been a Cultural Practitioner of Hawaiian Feather Art since 1996.  He was first introduced to the art of lei hulu by Mikioi Iwamoto and later fell under the mentorship of Paulette Nohealani Kahalepuna, Mary Louise Kaleonahenahe Kekuewa and Michael Vieira.  Herman acquired his knowledge and experience under the guidance of Aunty Paulette and Aunty Mary Lou while assisting them in the teaching of lei hulu, ‘uli’uli and kahili.  In June 2007 Aunty Mary Lou and Aunty Paulette, the foremost masters of Hawaiian Feather Art gave their acknowledgement and blessings to Herman to teach and perpetuate the Art of Hawaiian Feathers.  Herman has taught numerous workshops throughout California, Hawaii, Seattle, Portland, Japan and Taiwan.

Ulana Lauhala (Lauhala Weaving)

Skill Level – Basic though Intermediate
Early Bird Workshop Fee $125 ($150 after January 15th).

Each participant will learn part of the lauhala preparation process and to make their own Pale Lauhala(Square Mat for ‘Ipu heke), bamboo tools and learn a chant associated with Lauhala/Hala. The class will open with a short presentation on the traditions of Lauhala Weaving and overview of the Hala tree.

Class Requirements – Participants are to bring a small towel, scissors, and small spray bottle for water. Instructor to bring extra supplies for those who do not have.

Pi’iali’i Lawson is the Kumu (teacher) Ulana Lauhala and founder of Hui Ulana Lauhala o Kapalakiko the only Lauhala Weaving group in the Bay Area. He has been a practitioner of Lauhala Weaving for over 12 years continuing his family’s legacy. He was first taught by his uncle Kia Fronda in Waipi’o Valley, Hawai’i and during that time he also fell under the mentorship of his other aunts Pualani Muraki (Kona, Hawai’i) and Debbie Toko (Waipi’o Valley, Hawai’i) who are also both his Kumu. Residing on Hawai’i island, when he is the Bay Area he works with the Kaululehua Hawaiian Cultural Center in South San Francisco and with various Halau and organizations. He has been the resident Lauhala Practitioner at the center since 2009 continuing community workshops as well as with his Hui. He has taught lauhala weaving in New York, Japan and Mexico City. He has also had the honor of being an ‘alaka’i or assistant to his kumu at Ka Ulu Lauhala o Kona statewide annual weaving conference in 2014 and 2015. He was also an ‘alaka’i at the 2014 Nā Pono Hula workshops on Kaua’i with his Kumu.
