'Ano'ai Ke Aloha!
As we look forward to another new season, we reflect back on the many blessings and achievements we have experienced thus far this year:
We kicked off last season with a reprise of the stage performance of "A Walk by the Sea" at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts. We also began recording the music for the CD of the same name.
Mbira Master Erica Azim presented a solo mbira concert at the studio in December.
In January, Kumu Mahealani served as a panelist for the 2007 Ethnic Dance Festival auditions. Reknowned Middle Eastern dancer Aisha Ali presented a workshop.
In February, KaUaTuahine was invited to perform at the 2007 Black Choreographer's Festival.
Kumu Mahealani travelled to Zimbabwe to take part in an mbira workshop with master teachers, and for a Bira, or Ancestor Ceremony.
April brought us another National Dance Week session in which we offered free classes in Kathak, Hula and Ori.
July was particularly busy, as it brought us our annual Repertory Concert at Regents Theater in Oakland, the Sacred Dance Festival in Berkeley (where Kumu Mahealani taught a session entitled "Prayer Dances") and our latest performance tour to Tahiti.
In August we had another fun performance at the Oakland Chinatown Street Fair.
Season 2007 - 2008
We look forward to two exciting events to kick off our new season;
We are honored to welcome a number of new teachers to our family who will be offering an array of World dance and music, including Middle Eastern dance, Rhythms of Trinidad and the Caribbean, and dances of Bali!
Our first ever Lu'au on September 8th, and the official release party for the new CD, "A Walk by the Sea!"
Kumu Mahealani will be the Mistress of Ceremonies for the annual Kapalakiko Lu'au in November .
"A Walk by the Sea", the concert, will take place on December 8th at Regents Theater in Oakland
And a whole lot more!
Please check back periodically for updates and more details about our events. We are also working on an updated photo gallery, and an article about our performance tour to Tahiti.
Love and blessings!
